League of Legends World Championship 2023 Format

Play-In Stage:

The play-in-Stage will group teams into four double-elimination brackets, with each match contested as a best of-three. The decisive two brackets to determine the top two teams progressing to the Swiss Stage will be conducted as best-of-fives.
Swiss Stage:
A total of 16 teams will engage in the Swiss stage. In addition to the two teams qualifying from play in-stage, 14 teams will commence the competition in the Swiss stage. This includes the top four teams from LPL and LCK, as well as the top three teams from LEC and LCS. A five-round, Swiss-style format is adopted. Teams with identical win-loss records will face off against one another until they attain either three victories or three losses.
In the initial round, teams will be randomly paired against counterparts from different regions, competing in best-of-one matches. Subsequently, in the following rounds, teams will be rematched against squads with matching records. This cycle will persist for another five rounds. Rounds that involve qualifications and eliminations will be conducted as best-of-threes. Ultimately, teams amassing three wins secure passage to the Knockout Stage, while teams accumulating three losses will exit the tournament. A total of eight teams advance to the playoffs.
Knockout Stage:
The Knockout Stage, encompassing the quarterfinals, semifinals, and the final, maintains the same format as in previous years. Eight teams are selected to participate in single-elimination brackets following a “king of the hill” format.
